For Your Safety
(Relevant to my lifelong fascination with elevators and their quirks....)

Michael presses the 11 button. It lights up, and then about a half a second later it goes dark.

I press the 11 button. It stays lit.

"That was weird," he says. "It likes you better."

"I think it's telling you that you shouldn't be at work today."

"You think I . . . I should just turn around and go home?" he asks.

"Oh definitely. For your own safety. Before something else happens."

"For the safety of myself and those around me."
