Shared course:
History of the Modern Board Game 200
A survey course of board games from 1995 to the present, with special emphasis on award-winning German games. Students will be graded on the creation of a strategic board game with lots of stuff to buy.
My own courses:
CUL4421 – Advanced Ethnic Cuisine Cooking*
Students will extend their international culinary skills beyond the basic tacos, stir-fry, and spaghetti into dishes truly representative of their home countries and regions, using authentic ingredients, cooking methods, and cookware. Course takes the format of a hands-on practical lab, and students' work will be graded on authenticity, flavour, efficient preparation, and lack of subsequent intestinal injury. Course fees include costs for a tajine pot (which students get to keep after the course), a Mirte Stove (which students may take home if they provide adequate transport), and a live goat (which will no longer be available after course completion). Recommended concurrent enrolment in PHYS2305 – Digestive Health.
LIT1105 – Reading the Books that You Buy
One hour weekly discussion group aimed at encouraging students to manage their priorities in order to read the steadily increasing stack of books which their unquenchable love of fiction drives them to purchase. Each week, students will bring to class a book already in their possession which they have completed reading during that week, convincing any other students who own but haven't read the same book why they should make time for it as well.
ART1303 – Artistic Endeavors for the Dysfunctionally Perfectionistic
Basic course for those possessing rudimentary artistic talent or skills, but lack the combination of motivation and lack of self-criticism to allow themselves to explore their artistic abilities or to be satisfied with incomplete or mediocre initial efforts. A variety of art media are acceptable for the class including pencil, pen & ink, pastels, oils, watercolour, or charcoal. Students must provide their own supplies, and will be criticized harshly if the supplies are not the instructor-preferred ones.
PARA2208 – Basic Ghost and Spectre Protection
Introductory course in the prevention and eradication of basic ghost infestations, including simple rituals for ensuring that a home or other edifice is free of supernatural activity, along with psychological tactics for handling ghost-oriented fears and misgivings which could prevent an effective extermination. Students completing the course should possess the skills to sleep soundly even in the most eerie of surroundings. Students with garlic sensitivities discouraged from registering.
CINE2313 – Film Name-Dropping for the Cinematically Challenged
Survey course for students who desire to extend their repertoire of film actors, directors, writers and other cast and crew in order to speak intelligently about cinema in mixed company. No films will be viewed during the course, as it is presumed that students have already viewed most of them, but simply cannot recall the individuals who contributed to each work. Upon course completion students will be able to give a convincing diatribe contrasting Hal P. Warren's use of frontier imagery with that of Sergio Leone's, and will be able to connect Toshiro Mifune to Kevin Bacon in only three degrees.
* My university had 4 digit course numbers as opposed to the typical three. The AAAAxyzz digits stood for:
AAAA – Two to four letter code for the department or school
x – Recommended year to take the course (first years were not allowed to take 3 or 4-level courses, and 5-level courses were for grad students only)
y – Number of credit hours
zz – Serial number of the course within the department
