Photograph 23
Photograph 1: The inside of an animal supply store, Spanish architecture, in northern California. Room is dark. Outlines of cages, bags of food, and other goods can be made out in the darkness on the shelves. A small flashlight-size light, at the other end of the store, is the only light source.
Photograph 2: Another angle inside the store, taken toward the mysterious light. It seems that the light is floating in midair, with no apparent source or support.
Photograph 3: A friend, standing in the aisle near the light. A look of fright fills his face. The shadow of a ghostly figure appears faintly on the wall behind him.
Photograph 4: An archway, blocked by a wrought iron fence and gate. A set of stairs, decending into a cellar, can be seen within.
Photograph 5: Looking downward from a landing on a rough stone stairway. Walls and ceiling are very close, and the stairway is quite dark.
Photograph 6: A large underground performance hall, flooded with water, about 3 feet deep. A group of seals swims quietly in the water. A red curtain covers the stage at the far end of the hall.
Photograph 7: Same hall, but this time with a boatman at the edge of the water. Several friends are arguing with the boatman to negotiate passage across the water.
Photograph 8: In the boat. The seals circle the boat, just underneath the surface of the water. The mysterious light from the first two photographs can be seen at the far edge of the room.
Photograph 9: The stage at the end of the hall, behind the red curtain. The strange light is gone. Nothing out of the ordinary.
Photograph 10: A narrow hallway. The full group of friends is visible in this phtograph, as the photographer was in the rear. People present include the friend who was interested in seeing the pictures (in the present time), two other guys, and two girls. It's apparent from the looks on everyone's faces that they're not sure whether they're following something or running from it.
Photograph 11: Another large performance hall, this time with no water. This one is much darker than the last, but with a similar red curtain at the far end. the light from an unseen spotlight illuminates the curtain.
Photograph 12: This photograph moves, like some sort of holographic image. It begins as the same image as the last photograph, but then the distinct shadow of an old woman in a wheelchair slides across the curtain toward the middle of the stage. Just before it reaches the center, the woman in the shadow stops, turns toward the photographer, and emits a disturbing cackle. The woman in the shadow then turns back toward the left and rolls back off the stage.
Photograph 13: This photograph is entirely black.
Photograph 14: The entrance to a rough-hewn cave passage, carved into the dark basalt rock. Light filtering through the cave indicates that the passage is not incredibly long.
Photograph 15: The exit of the cave. A beach can be seen ahead, through the cave opening.
Photograph 16: A tall thin figure stands at the edge of the water, facing the ocean, so that his features are hidden.
Photograph 17: The man up close. The photograph almost seems to be in motion (but does not truly move as did photograph 12), depicting the skeletal figure turning around to face the photographer. It is becoming apparent that he has an fleshless skull for a face.
Photograph 18: The beach, facing the sea. A wall of human skulls, about 3 skulls high, lines the curved edge of the inlet for about 30 feet, almost like a dyke. The ghostly figure seems to be rapidly approaching the photographer from the right.
Photograph 19: The beach, facing south. A small rowboat has been spotted at the edge of the inlet, and friends are already beginning to flee the apparition, running toward the boat.
Photograph 20: Inside the rowboat along the coast. Two friends row desparately to pull away from the pursuing figure.
Photograph 21: Still in the boat. Fog is thick, and nothing can be seen aside from the seawater surrounding the boat.
Photograph 22: Yet another photograph from inside the boat. Through the fog, the silhouette of buildings appears along the shore ahead.
Photograph 23: A set of complex blue swirling patterns surround a blue circle, slightly to left of center of the photograph. Appears to be a photo development anomaly of some sort. The remainder of the print is black to dark gray. This picture did not appear in a friend's copy of the prints, which was the reason for reviewing these pictures in the first place (so he could see this particular picture).
Photograph 24: A pier in San Francisco. A line of tourists waits to board a tour boat, while others are getting off. Several friends are winding through the people after scrambling out of the rowboat.
