Alarm 2
My alarm clock had begun going off, which initiated the following dream:
I was living in a house with several other roommates, and heard an obnoxious beeping noise in the back part of the house. I walked toward the sound, and found a roommate's computer terminal, with text rapidly scrolling across it.
After examining the screen contents for a few minutes, I determined that my roommate had been tailing the /var/log/messages file, and the file was growing so quickly that the output was filling the screen buffer faster than the output could be generated. Each time the buffer filled up (about once per second), the machine would beep.
I hit Control-C on the keyboard, in an effort to break the tail, but the keyboard didn't seem to respond.
Looking for an alternate plan, I decided to try to figure out what was causing all the log entries.
About this time, one of my other roommates had walked up behind me.
"What's this?" he asked.
"Not sure. You seen Greg this morning?"
"No, we were playing disc golf yesterday, and just before we finished the 18th hole, he took off. Left his disc lying 20 feet from the basket. I figured he just left early when I wasn't looking, and forgot about the disc. He still not around?"
"Well, that explains the error, sort of, but this is just not right."
"Strange."
"Yeah."
